What is a Hernia?
A hernia occurs when an organ or tissue pushes through a weak spot in the surrounding muscle or connective tissue. It commonly develops in the abdominal or groin area and can cause discomfort, pain, and complications if left untreated. Hernias do not resolve on their own and may worsen over time, often requiring surgical intervention.
Types of Hernias:
✔ Inguinal Hernia – The most common type, occurring in the groin.
✔ Umbilical Hernia – Forms near the belly button, often in infants or adults with obesity.
✔ Incisional Hernia – Develops at the site of a previous surgical incision.
✔ Femoral Hernia – More common in women, near the upper thigh.
✔ Epigastric Hernia – Occurs in the upper abdomen due to weak abdominal muscles.
Symptoms of a Hernia
• Visible bulge in the abdomen or groin, which may increase in size when standing or straining.
• Pain or discomfort, especially during physical activity, lifting, or bending.
• Heaviness or pressure in the affected area.
• Burning or aching sensation around the hernia site
• If a hernia becomes strangulated (trapped and cutting off blood supply), it can cause severe pain, redness, and nausea, requiring emergency surgery.
Diagnosis of a Hernia
A hernia is diagnosed through:
✅ Physical Examination – The doctor examines the bulge and checks for tenderness.
✅ Ultrasound – Helps detect hernias that are not visible externally.
✅ CT Scan or MRI – Used for complex or recurrent hernias.
Treatment Options for Hernia
1. Open Surgery
• A traditional approach where a single incision is made at the hernia site.
• The protruding tissue is pushed back, and the weak muscle area is reinforced with stitches or a mesh.
• Recommended for large or complicated hernias.
2. Laparoscopic Hernia Surgery
• Small incisions and a camera (laparoscope) are used for precise repair.
• Benefits: Faster recovery, less pain, minimal scarring.
• Suitable for inguinal, umbilical, and incisional hernias.
3. Robotic Hernia Surgery
• An advanced form of minimal invasive surgery using robotic-assisted precision.
• Advantages: Enhanced accuracy, smaller incisions, quicker recovery, and lower risk of recurrence.
• Best for complex and recurrent hernias.
